New Changes at the MIABC

As we continue to grow and look towards future opportunities and challenges, we are better positioning our talented team to meet the ever-changing needs of BC local governments. These changes will help us to continually provide our members with dependable support through the stability of our insurance programs, risk management, education, and claims services.

Effective July 1, 2022, the Member Services and Insurance departments will be united under the umbrella of the Insurance Services Department. Combining these departments will allow our staff to address the insurance and risk management needs of local governments from a more holistic and collaborative approach.

Nicole Purves will oversee the new department as the Director of Insurance Services. She will work closely with Sandra Mayo and Marina Sen-Partridge as they take on the new roles of Manager of Risk Management Services and Manager of Member Engagement respectively. Sandra will be responsible for overseeing our added value programs, including loss control and education services, and Marina will ensure that our members have access to all of our insurance products, tools, programs, and education.

The last three years have demonstrated how quickly our world is changing. Our members have faced many challenges, including the catastrophic impacts of climate change, a stark rise in cyber and social engineering attacks, a hard insurance market driving significant premium increases and coverage exclusions, and an overextended workforce with increasing vacancies and a limited talent pool.

To keep up with and address our members’ evolving needs, Maryam Sherkat, our Chief Risk Officer and new General Counsel, together with Samantha Boyce, our Assistant General Counsel and now Manager of Strategic Innovation, will be working together to design a Strategic Innovation Framework to help us identify, prioritize, and assess the feasibility of new initiatives that will benefit our members.

In addition to these changes, Megan Chorlton has officially transitioned into her role as Chief Executive Officer, and Claudia Chan has become the Manager of Administrative Services and is overseeing the general administration of the MIABC office, including IT.

We are confident that these changes will place us in an even better position to deliver the promise of our mission and the potential of our vision. After all, We Are the Community We Keep.
