Each year, funds are allocated to members that can be used toward risk reducing initiatives to limit liability or property loss. Subject to a few conditions, but most non-budgeted projects would qualify. Recommendations from a loss control inspection report are automatically eligible.

The MIABC maintains a Business Continuity Hub that provides information and directs you to useful external resources. Your member points under the Loss Control Program can also be utilized for developing a Business Continuity Plan.

A representative from the MIABC makes contact with you either before an impending catastrophic loss (for example, when a storm is predicted but has not yet hit) or immediately following the loss.

Our team will provide key contact information and schedule regular check-ins to determine where you may need support. We will also discuss what your priorities for response and potential rebuilding are, as needed. This will likely involve a trip to your location within a day or so of the loss.

The MIABC helps property members maximize coverage by examining grey areas of their policy in light of the current loss. This service includes highlighting members' business interruption coverage to assist with extra expenses that might occur as a result of setting up temporary operations at another location to continue operating.

By subscribing to the program, a local government can speak to a municipal lawyer from Lidstone & Company free of charge for 30 minutes. In the event that their question cannot be answered in that time, the local government can retain that lawyer, subject to a predetermined fee schedule. There are no limits on the number of times the local government may call to obtain advice.

The MIABC's Member Services department will have a staff member on call to provide insurance/risk management advice to the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and possibly attend regular EOC section chiefs meetings in person or virtually.

The MIABC's Associate Member program allows members to add certain individuals or groups that are stepping into the shoes of local government to provide services to the community onto its MIABC liability policy during disaster events for an additional premium (for example, a building inspector).

For MIABC members who purchase Legal Expense Insurance, this policy provides unlimited access to a Legal Helpline for any legal questions, whether they are covered or not.

Unforeseen legal issues can also arise from these events. Members who purchase Legal Expense Insurance have coverage to pursue their own legal actions, such as disputes relating to buying or selling goods or providing or obtaining services.

The MIABC knows these types of events affect employees inside and outside their work. Employees are able to access this helpline to discuss legal issues that fall outside of their employment if the local government authorizes this use. Limited to the provision of general advice on matters and no review or draft documents.

This service includes review and comment on the insurance and indemnity provisions of contracts being entered into with other parties to provide awareness for potential gaps or exposure. The MIABC also provides access to an insurance matrix tool to help determine limits of insurance that are appropriate based on the level of risk a contract or activity provides.

Our team helps educate you on the claims process so you understand that it is iterative and the initial loss adjustments are preliminary and will likely change over time. As engineers and architects get involved, we will continue to adjust the loss. The MIABC understands the importance of regularly meeting with our members at every step to control the conversation.

Ensures that pertinent information is provided to our property member. Early assignment is important because these resources are normally scarce, and time is of the essence in reserving them.

During the time of recovery and rebuild, local governments might need extra insurance when they are removing debris or when reconstructing assets. Our brokers can help to source these coverages through CRIS, the MIABC's brokerage service arm.

The MIABC has several toolkits available to members to help reconstruct documents that might have been lost in a catastrophic incident. The following toolkits are available:

To help foster intergovernmental collaboration, the MIABC connects members with peers who have suffered similar catastrophic events. This may include members in B.C. or other organizations elsewhere.

The MIABC helps coordinate inspection of either a facility or a particular type of hazard to review issues that could result in a liability claim or property loss. Following the inspection, a written report is provided including recommendations. The MIABC can provide training for members in advance of reopening any public occupancy facility.
