Loss Control Program

Protect your community from potential liability and losses.

The MIABC’s Loss Control Program provides members with services that highlight potential liability and losses arising from local government properties, strengthening policies and documentation, and improving risk intelligence of members and staff through training.

Program Changes

The MIABC introduced changes to our Loss Control Program to tailor existing tools and services alongside specific loss control services to meet the needs of our members.

In 2024 we created and introduced our Best Practices Assessment (BPA) to almost 100 of our members, with more than 50 completing their BPA in 2024!

Below is an overview of what you can expect this year and how we are here to help.

Completed Best Practices Assessment (BPA) in 2024

For our members who completed a BPA in 2024, you can now access loss control services:

  • Each member will have access to one loss control service each year. The options are:
    • One policy creation or review
    • One documentation audit or review
    • One customized training session
    • One virtual inspection
  • In the fall, we will continue with our Regional Days in the remining two regions of the province. These one-day mini–Risk Management Conferences, part of our initiative to divide the province into four regions, will offer sessions and training tailored for local government employees. Additionally, we will host a walking inspection workshop the day before each regional day, providing an opportunity to share our experience and insights with participants during an informal inspection. Stay tuned for location and registration details coming this summer!

What is the Best Practices Assessment?

  • Through the Best Practices Assessment, members will work with MIABC staff to establish a baseline for their unique risk profile.
  • Based on the BPA results, the MIABC will provide each member with a report tailored to address their identified risks.  This report will recommend MIABC resources and services that can help mitigate or manage these risks, aligning with the Loss Control Program's goal of increasing local government risk intelligence.
  • Our goal is to offer each member the opportunity to complete the BPA with an MIABC staff member by the end of 2025.

Being offered a Best Practices Assessment (BPA) in 2025

The remaining members who were not offered a BPA in 2024 will have the ability to complete their BPA throughout 2025.

What does this mean for my local government?

Completing your BPA will provide access to loss control program services. Additionally:

  • In-person inspections are suspended until further evaluation in 2026.
  • The discontinuation of the Members Points system does not affect access to your Risk Management Grant account.

It’s important to note that these changes only affect the specific loss control services noted on this page. All other MIABC services remain available, and we continue to welcome your risk management and insurance coverage questions through AskUsAnything@miabc.org
